Launch of the Tweet Towel, a mash up of old fashioned crafts with social media, in the form of a customised tea towel, with profits to digital inclusion charitable projects.

We Are What We Do, the social movement behind the Anya Hindmarch ‘I’m Not a Plastic Bag’ shopper, Historypin, and Action Stationery has come up with the new cult gift for this Christmas, the Tweet Towel.

Colliding old fashioned crafts with digital social networking, this unique product allows users to create a customised tea towel bearing an embroidered, personal tweet of 140 characters or less.

It’s the perfect way to preserve a tweet for eternity, send someone a personalised message or treat someone obsessed with social media.

The £10 Tweet Towel offers an inventive way to give a personal present this Christmas… and raise lots of money for charity at the same time – all profits go towards We Are What We Do’s charitable foundation, raising money for their digital inclusion projects, helping get Grannies and Grandads online, and better connected with younger generations.

Nick Stanhope from We Are What We Do comments:

The Tweet Towel is contributing to a genuinely worthy cause. 9.2 million people in the UK alone are offline, and 6.4 million of them are over 65. These people miss out on having access to services that can increase their independence and sociability, saving up to £560 per year from shopping and paying bills online and, perhaps most importantly, communicating with their friends and family that are online. 90% of communication between 11–18 years olds is digital and lack of Internet access is adding to the growing divide between generations.”

Tweet Towels can be ordered from www.tweettowel.com via a memorable interface that looks like a cross-stitched version of the Twitter site.

Messages, like all tweets, must be less than 140 characters long and will be embroidered and delivered within three to five days.

Notes to Editors

We Are What We Do, registered charity number 1134546 is a not-for-profit social movement which encourages individuals to take small actions that will make a big difference socially and environmentally. Founded in 2004, We Are What We Do has published three titles, Change The World For A Fiver which sold over one million copies worldwide, Change The World 9 to 5 which was launched by David Cameron in 2006 and Teach Your Granny To Text which was given to every school in the country by the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) as a teaching resource. A collaboration with Anya Hindmarch and Sainsbury’s in 2007 launched the I’m Not a Plastic Bag shopper, taking the issue onto the front pages and helping Sainsbury’s reduce the number of free carrier bags issued by 58% in the following two years. wearewhatwedo.org features over 150 simple, positive everyday actions anyone can do to and track – the current most popular actions include Hug someone, Cook a meal from scratch, Use a mug not a plastic cup and Read a story with a child.

This year, to tackle the intergenerational divide, We Are What We Do have created Historypin, a Google Maps application that allows users to pin historic photos onto present day locations, giving people a sense of where they’ve come from and what has shaped today.
