Historypin Unveils iPhone App

Mobile App Will Further Historypin’s Mission to Create a Shared Communal History.

Historypin, the interactive platform and mobile application designed to bring people together through historic photos and stories, today unveiled its app that is supported by the iPhone. The Historypin mobile app, which was originally unveiled on July 11, 2011, was previously only available to Android users.

We are thrilled to launch this new edition of the Historypin app, which will broaden our user base and allow more people to immerse themselves in the history of their current location, submit a photo, or view historic archives on the go,” said Nick Stanhope, Historypin’s creator and the CEO of We Are What We Do, a U.K– based non-profit that works to impact social issues by developing products, tools and services to positively shift mass behavior.

Historypin is intended to unite people, no matter their generation or culture, and the iPhone app only furthers our mission to create and share a global history by granting more users access to the Smartphone program.”

Historypin.com, the main hub of the project, allows users to upload their historical content to a map as images, movies, audio recordings, stories and recollections, where it can be geo-tagged and dated. Once on the site, street level images can be overlaid onto Google Maps’ Street View feature for a fascinating and nostalgic then-and-now juxtaposition.

In its previous beta form that began last June, Historypin received the 2011 Webby Award for Best Nonprofit / Charitable Site for its innovative social use of technology. During that beta phase, more than 50,000 photos, videos, audio and stories were uploaded by over 20,000 users from all over the world and over 100 institutions ranging from The New York Public Library to The Chinese Historical Society of America.

As an app exclusively available to Android users, Historypin was downloaded around 10,000 times. To download the app, visit the Apple App store.
