We Are What We Do
Who are we?
We're not another charity. We're not an institution. We Are What We Do is a movement. Our aim is to inspire people to use their everyday actions to change the world. Whoever they are. And wherever they are. And that includes you.
We live by the maxim small actions X lots of people = big change. It’s not rocket science but it does work!
We started back in 2004 by bringing together 100 simple, everyday actions that can improve our environment, our health, and our communities and make our planet and the people on it much happier. We believe that if enough of us do these actions we will start to make an impact on some of the biggest problems we are all facing. And in joining together in this way, we will create a new community of like-minded “do-ers”; people united by a belief in the possibility of change and our individual responsibility in making it happen alongside that of governments, corporations and other institutions and networks.
We began by putting the 100 actions into books - Change the World for a Fiver and Change the World 9 to 5 - but the books quickly burst their bindings and so far have sold nearly one million copies worldwide. Today we are books, bags, campaigns, education programmes, community development, public speaking, newsletters, more than one million actions pledged on this website, partnerships with a huge range of different organisations and a growing on-line community to which we hope to shortly add you!

Where did the idea originate?
We Are What We Do began life in the United Kingdom, as a project of the charity Community Links. Community Links is an innovative inner city charity running community-based projects in east London. Most of its work is delivered in Newham, one of the poorest boroughs in Europe, whilst Links UK shares the local experience with practitioners and policy makers nationwide through an extensive training, consultancy and publications programme. The charity’s founder, David Robinson drew the original idea from his 25 years as a community worker in east London where he saw both the need for change and the power of people coming together to make it happen. David was joined by a small development group which included people from the creative industries, business, voluntary sector and government. Among this group was Eugenie Harvey, an Australian with a background in communications and marketing and shortly after meeting David and joining the group she quit her job and joined as a volunteer to develop the project.
How many of you are there?
Well that is a really good question and it does tend to change from day to day, month to month. At the moment (middle of 2008) we are team of 6 fulltime and 5 part time paid employees in London with representatives in Australia and Canada. So the short answer is “not very many” and while in the future we hope there will be a few more, we never see ourselves as huge (by which we mean floors and floors of people who don’t really know each other other than as “that girl with glasses in accounts”. No sirrrree. That is not for us!). Rather, we see ourselves as a small group of people who are utterly committed to a vision and determined to inspire and encourage as many other people to get behind this vision and help us make it a reality.
How are we funded?
We are currently funded by proceeds from the sale of our Change the World books and other products and services. Our education programme in the UK is funded by the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF), the Aldridge Foundation and the youth volunteering charity, v and our Newham-based community project is funded by the Stratford Development Partnership. We work out of donated office space in London at the Brunswick Group. We also receive pro bono support from law firm Allen & Overy and Accenture has provided us with some management consultancy to help us with our exciting plans for growth. Many other companies and organisations have supported us since we launched in 2004 – too many to list here – but to each of them we express our thanks. If you would like to talk to us about making a donation to support our activity, please contact eugenie.harvey[at]wearewhatwedo.org
How do foreign publishers and companies get involved?
We’d love to hear from any foreign publishers who are interested in publishing any of our titles. Please contact our representative Nicki Kennedy at the Intercontinental Literary Agency.
Companies interested in discussing opportunities to work with us and support our growth in the UK and abroad should contact zoe.cameron[at]wearewhatwedo.org
Do you give talks about your work at events?
Yes we do and we love doing it! David and Eugenie are out as often as they are able speaking at conferences, events, book fairs and as soon as he has finished the new book (out for this Christmas!) we’ll be letting Nick who runs the education programme out of the office to help us spread the word. If you would like to find out more, click here for Eugenie & David's biogs or email sandra.deeble[at]wearewhatwedo.org for details of availability and cost.
Additionally, through the Young Speakers Programme we will be unleashing 200 trained volunteers (aged 16-18) on schools and community groups in the North West and east London from summer this year (2008). If you would like information about booking a young speaker, contact sam[at]wearewhatwedo.org.uk

So what can you do right now to get involved?
Well, the short answer is loads...
Obviously the first thing is to get and do the actions, or if you’re already doing them, give yourself a little pat on the back and then...
Get tracking! Sign up and track your actions... and don’t forget to get our monthly newsletter
Tell the world! Let everybody know what you’re up to, post a message on our soapbox
Dare a friend! In order for this to work we’ve got to get as many people as we can involved, so whip out your address book and dare your friends to act
And of course you could buy our books and give them away to your friends and family or anyone else you think might be interested or to whom you want to give some practical tips for getting started.

I want to know more!
Well if you’ve got a question which isn’t answered anywhere on the site, send us an email and we’ll do our best to respond as quickly as possible (though remember how tiny we are and be patient!). Email us at sara[at]wearewhatwedo.org (oh and in answer to your question, “Who’s Sara?”, well she was our very first volunteer back at day dot and while she is no longer with us in person, her spirit lives on in her email address! It’s actually now Zoe who will probably answer your question.)
So that’s us
Thanks for visiting our site. Thanks for signing up to do our actions (and not just once, but everyday), thanks for joining in, telling others and spreading the word.
